Reactive or aggressive? The difference decides the program

Most dogs that owners call “aggressive” are reactive: they bark, lunge and pull because they are frustrated, over-stimulated or afraid, not because they intend to hurt anyone. True aggression carries intent: a hard stare, a stiff body, growling, snapping or biting. The two look alike from the end of a leash, and the in-person consultation exists to tell them apart before we recommend a program.

Types of aggression and reactivity we work with

Dog-directed reactivity

Lunging, barking or growling at other dogs, usually worse on leash. The most common case we see and the one that most often turns out to be frustration rather than aggression.

Human-directed aggression

Growling, snapping or biting at strangers, guests or delivery drivers. Often fear-based or territorial. Handled in the 3 Week Aggression Board & Train.

Resource guarding

Guarding food, toys, furniture or a person. We work the protocol with the dog and then teach the family how to keep it in place.

Fear-based reactions

Dogs that snap when cornered, touched unexpectedly or rushed, including many rescues with an unknown history.

Territorial and barrier behavior

Door, window, fence and car aggression, and the hallway problems that come with apartment living.

Anxiety that looks like aggression

Dogs that shut down, pace or defend their person when stressed. Separation anxiety has its own page.

Who works with your dog

Off Leash K9 Training Texas is owned by Justin Rie, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and master trainer with more than 15 years of experience. Reactivity and aggression cases are matched to the trainer on our team whose background fits the dog; working breeds with a bite history go to handlers who have worked bite-trained dogs. Meet the team on our trainers page.

All training happens at our Lewisville facility, which has a separate room for consultations with reactive and aggressive dogs, indoor training floors and outdoor proofing areas. Hablamos español.

What we will and will not promise

No trainer can ethically promise that a dog will never bite again; any dog with teeth can bite. What we can do is change how your dog responds to its triggers, teach you to read the early warning signs, and give you management tools that keep people and other dogs safe. Results depend on the dog, the problem, the program length and, most of all, what the family does after the dog comes home.

If the consultation shows that training is not the right answer for your dog, we tell you so and talk through the alternatives, including your veterinarian or a veterinary behaviorist. We would rather say it at the consultation than take your money.

Aggressive dog training in Dallas–Fort Worth: questions we hear most

Can an aggressive dog be trained?

Most reactive and many aggressive dogs improve with structured training, and a large share of dogs labeled aggressive turn out to be reactive. The in-person consultation tells us which one you have and whether a program is the right call. Some dogs need ongoing management for life, and we say so when that is the case.

How much does aggressive dog training cost in Dallas?

$1,100 to $4,000 at Off Leash K9 Training Texas: the Aggression Dog Basic & Advanced lesson program is $1,100, the 2 Week Reactivity/Anxiety Board & Train is $3,500 and the 3 Week Aggression Board & Train is $4,000. The in-person consultation before a board & train is $50. Financing is available through Affirm, subject to eligibility.

Is the first call really free?

Yes. The 15-minute discovery call at (972) 372-9225 is free. The only paid step before training is the in-person consultation at our Lewisville facility: 30 minutes for $50, or a 1-hour Puppy Training Consultation for $100 if your dog is a puppy.

My dog has already bitten someone. Can you still help?

We work with bite cases regularly. A bite does not rule your dog out, but it does mean we need the full history at the consultation and a realistic conversation about outcomes. Human aggression and bite cases go into the 3 Week Aggression Board & Train, which gives the dog more time to decompress at a slower pace.

What is the difference between the 2-week and 3-week programs?

The 2 Week Reactivity/Anxiety Board & Train ($3,500) is for dogs that bark, lunge or shut down around dogs, people or new places. The 3 Week Aggression Board & Train ($4,000) is for aggression cases, including human aggression and bite cases, that need more time. Both require a consultation first and both end with a hand-off session for the family.

Do you use shock collars on aggressive dogs?

We use modern e-collars as one tool in a balanced program, introduced only after the dog has been conditioned to them, and never as punishment for aggression. Many reactivity cases are handled mostly through structure, obedience and counter-conditioning. Our e-collar guide explains how we condition a dog to the tool.

Will my dog forget the training at home?

Not if the family keeps the structure going. Every board & train ends with a one-on-one hand-off session, and the 2-week program includes lifetime support on obedience training, so you can come back for help if things slip.

I live in an apartment. Can you work on hallway and elevator reactivity?

Yes. Threshold work, door and hallway manners and neutrality around other dogs are part of the reactivity program, and your trainer shows you how to repeat the routines in your building during the hand-off session.

My puppy is showing early signs of aggression. Is it too early?

No. Growling over food, snapping when handled or hard play-biting are easiest to fix in puppies. Start with a 1-hour Puppy Training Consultation ($100), which covers bite inhibition and socialization.

Where are you, and who do you serve?
